Last September, Pitchfork reported that Will Oldham, the man behind the many incarnations of Palace, was in the process of re-recording his best songs for a greatest hits album, with the aid of a bevy of friends and hardscrabble Nashville session players. In October, we reported... pretty much the same thing. There's a glitch in the Matrix! To avoid an unwarranted third echo, we'll gloss over the basic details and de rigueur jokes and just cut right to the chase: the official title, tracklist and release date
According to the Drag City website, Will Oldham's greatest hits collection will be titled Bonnie "Prince" Billy Sings Greatest Palace Music, and will be released on single CD and double LP come March 23rd. Since the "hits" were chosen by fans who voted for their favorites on the Palace website, the collection is not as broad a survey of Oldham's career as it might have been: Greatest Palace Music will draw heavily from Days in the Wake and Viva Last Blues, which clock in with five and four selections, respectively.
The collection will also include a couple songs originally found on the Mountain EP, and one apiece from the Ohio River Boat seven-inch, the Hope EP, the Arrow Through the Bitch EP, plus one measly song (!) from the superb There Is No One What Will Take Care Of You ("Riding," natch). Without further ado, here's the official tracklist; the bounty that will be cloistered behind cover art featuring an impressionistic mountain/lake scene in vibrant pastels: |
