i drove to detroit from toronto on monday, november 8th. i left toronto at 1 pm and arrived at my hotel around 5pm. i had a quick shower and headed out to the venue "The Magic Bag." when i got there the place was pretty empty and there wasn't anyone hanging about waiting for the doors to open. i was very pleased however to see his name on the marquee so i took a few pix.
i knocked on the door and asked the guy who answered if robin was in, he replied "Robin who?" i just stood back and looked at the marquee and laughed. he said "I don't even know who that is" and shut the door. so i walked across the street to a coffee shop and sat down with my hot chocolate waiting for the doors to open. while waiting i met a guy named eddy (who says he's going to join the forums btw) and he, rob and i sat and had a good old cocteau chat while we waited. eddy informed me that he didn't have a ticket, i told him i was supposed to be on the guest list and if robin remembered to do that i would give him my spare ticket. (for some reason they had a sign on the door which stated that tickets would not be available at the venue.)
8pm rolls around and they did indeed have my name on the guestlist so i gave eddy my ticket and he was very pleased. so we went in and sat right in the front, had a drink and waited for the place to fill up. while waiting i took a few pictures of the empty stage and the screen.
now here's the funny bit....i don't have any pics of the actual performance. the reason being....i used a digital camera for all of the quick snapshots but for the performance i wanted to use a real camera - with a real zoom lens - and real film. so, as soon as those are developed i'll insert them right here.
needless to say when robin came on stage he got a lovely round of applause. he began playing and the room fell silent in awe of the wonderful sounds he was creating. i didn't know what to look at...at times i wanted to watch him play and fiddle with his equipment but then i was drawn to the screen and the wonderful collage of images he had created. lumiere is a perfect translation of his music. ambient yet vibrant, full of life yet calm and soothing, electric, lush, thick and just plain brilliant. his ability to create a film that translates his music into light was evident.
after his 40 minute performance he happily walked off stage while nearly everyone gave him a (much deserved) standing ovation.
i immediately headed for the backstage curtain where the security guard stood in my way. i explained to him that i was on the guestlist and wanted to go back and say hello to robin. after a bit of banter and confusion he let me go. robin was in the middle of his "post gig post mortem" and seemed delighted yet frantic about his performance. it was a joy to watch.
he then let me bring a few friends backstage with me to take some pictures....the other guy is eddy and rob (hitherto) took the pictures for me. eddy seemed over the moon to have the opportunity to meet with robin.....and so was i. no matter how many times you meet one of your idols it's still magical!
(note: you can see one of my cocteau tattoo's in this pic, which robin thinks is lovely and very subtle!:-*)
